Frequently Asked Questions (FAQS)

🌍 What are the qualities of a good geography tutor?

A good geography tutor should motivate and bond with their students in order to create an environment in which the students feel ready to learn. A good private tutor should also be patient and able to explain complicated concepts in various ways.

💻 Which is better: in-person or online geography tuition?

If you want to start private geography lessons but are unsure whether to choose in-person or online tuition, here are some things to consider. If you prefer to study at home with minimum contact with other people, online tuition is the best option for you. If, on the other hand, you enjoy a routine and meeting people, having the tutor come to your house or going to theirs, may be a good option.

👧 Where can I find a geography tutor for children?

You can find geography lessons for children on FindTutors. You can use the filters to choose the stage of education relevant to your child to find appropriate geography tutors. In the tutors’ adverts you can find out more about who their lessons are catered to, whether it’s students of all ages, GCSE students or otherwise. If you are still in doubt about whether their geography lessons are suitable for children, you can always contact them and ask.

🤑 How much does a geography tutor cost?

Whilst it varies depending on the geography tutor and their qualifications, a geography lesson usually costs around £16 or £17 an hour. You can find out how much a geography tutor charges by looking at their advert.

🤝 Do I need private geography lessons?

Anyone can start private geography lessons out of curiosity. However, if you or your child is at school and you are wondering whether tuition is needed, ask your child’s geography teacher whether your child is underperforming. You can also check their grades to see whether they need help to achieve top marks.

About geography lessons

How to find a geography tutor

Since there are not many specialised tuition centres dedicated to geography, the two main ways to find geography tutors are through online tutoring marketplaces like FindTutors or word of mouth. If you do not know anyone who has used a geography tutor before, online marketplaces are your best bet. You can choose from geography tutors all over the UK and read reviews from their current and previous students to make sure they deliver results.

Here is a step-by-step guide to finding tutors for geography:

 1. Identify your goals: Before finding tutors, first identify why you have decided to start geography lessons. Understanding what you need will help you narrow down your choices.
 2. Use the filters: Now that you have identified your goals use the filters to find tutors that match your criteria. For example, if you are looking for an A level geography tutor, use the “secondary school” filter to find geography tutors that are relevant for you. If, on the other hand, you want a geography tutor online, use the “online” filter to narrow down your search results.
 3. Check their ads and profiles: Now use all the information available to make an informed decision about whether the tutors are suitable for you. You can read their adverts and profiles to learn more about their experience, qualifications and lessons as well as their prices and availability. Then make a list of the tutors that catch your eye.
 4. Contact tutors: Contact all of the tutors on your list to ask more about their lessons, teaching style and availability. It is recommended to contact multiple geography tutors to ensure that you find one that suits your schedule.
 5. Interview or trial lesson: Now that you have narrowed down your list of geography tutors to the ones that suit your learning style, goals and availability, you can ask them for an interview or free trial lesson. This is a good way to get to know the tutors and experience their teaching methods in person.
 6. Choose a tutor: Finally, it’s time to make a decision. The best tutor for you should be the one that taught and bonded with you the most in the free trial lesson. One of the keys to success when it comes to finding tutors, is to choose someone you get along with.

Tips for passing geography exams

If you are taking your A Levels, GCSEs or Nationals, these tips will help you revise and make the most of your geography tuition:

 • Note taking: When taking notes during geography lessons, whether it’s at school or during tuition, you should make sure that everything is legible and well-organised. Think of it as a revision guide for when you are nearing exam time.
 • Take tuition seriously: You should treat your tuition like a school lesson: arrive on time, don’t skip class, do your homework and come prepared. If you do these things you will be making the most of your private tuition.
 • Create a revision timetable: You should not leave revision or tuition to 5 weeks before your exams. The best way to revise is to start at the beginning of the school year, revising regularly according to a revision schedule or timetable. You can ask your geography tutor to help you create a timetable that fits your other commitments.

Revise by yourself: Don’t rely on your private geography lessons to get you through the exam by themselves, you need to put in some effort too. You should go over what you went over at school and during tuition by yourself and answer practice questions so that you can identify difficult topics which you can focus on in your next tutoring session.
