11+ (or 11-plus) is a selective entrance exam, usually taken at the beginning of the sixth form of a primary or preparatory school, and usually held in September. The exam is part of the seventh-form entrance process at UK grammar schools, state-funded secondary schools with a strong focus on academic achievement, and some fee-paying independent schools.
The subjects that are asked in the exam vary by county. Generally, the exam will contain the following:
Especially the mathematics and language sections of the exam are easy to prepare for with tutoring. But how expensive is tutoring in your area?
The cost of 11 plus tuition can vary considerably depending on a number of factors, including the location, the qualifications and experience of the tutor, the format of the tuition (private or online) and the duration of the tuition. The average price for 11 plus tuition is between £9 and £12.
There are many ways to find a tutor. For one, you can check your school for notices and offers of tutoring. You can also ask your friends if they know any tutors.
However, if you want to choose from a wider range of tutors, it makes sense to search online. Tutoring platforms such as Findtutors.co.uk not only have a large database of tutors, but also allow you to upload an ad. This allows you to search individually for the perfect tutor for you.
A tutor can assess your strengths and weaknesses in the subject and focus on reinforcing fundamental concepts. They can also help you practise for the exam with exercises and give you tips for passing the exams.
Tutoring for the 11 plus exams is not very different from other tutoring, which is why there are generally two types of tutoring:
Private tutoring: This is personal tutoring that takes place either at your home or at another location, such as a tutoring facility or the tutor's home.
Online tutoring: In this form, you do the online lessons with the tutor using video call tools, such as Google Meet, Skype or Zoom.
In addition to the two main types of tutors, there are several subcategories, namely:
Specialist 11 plus tutors: They focus exclusively on preparing students for the 11 Plus exams. They possess in-depth knowledge of the exam syllabus, format, and content. These tutors are experienced in delivering targeted instruction and have a track record of helping students achieve outstanding results.
Subject-Specific tutors: They specialise in teaching specific subjects, such as English or mathematics, required for the 11 Plus exams. They can provide focused support in strengthening a student's understanding and skills in these subjects, ensuring they excel in the corresponding exam sections.
Online tutors: They offer the flexibility of virtual learning, allowing students to access tutoring from anywhere with an internet connection. Online tutoring platforms provide a wide range of tutors, ensuring students can find the perfect fit for their needs. Virtual lessons often include interactive features, such as screen sharing and digital whiteboards, to enhance the learning experience.
Group tutors: They conduct lessons with multiple students simultaneously. This approach can be cost-effective and provide opportunities for peer interaction and collaborative learning. Group tutoring can also help students develop teamwork and communication skills, which are valuable in the 11 Plus exams.
Home tutors: They provide tutoring sessions in the comfort of the student's home. This option offers personalised attention and a familiar learning environment. Home tutoring is particularly beneficial for pupils who thrive in familiar surroundings and may feel more comfortable in their own homes.
Private 11 plus tutors play a crucial role in preparing pupils for these exams. Their expertise and tailored approach provide several benefits. They personalise the learning and adapt to your needs. Furthermore they can help you prioritise your exam preparation and practise specific exercises with you. Some other benefits are:
Individualized Feedback and Support:Private tutors provide timely and constructive feedback to students, highlighting their strengths and areas that require improvement. This personalised feedback helps students to track their progress, build confidence, and make necessary adjustments to their study plan.
Boosting Confidence and Motivation: The journey towards the 11 Plus exams can be daunting for students. Private tutors provide the support and encouragement needed to boost students' confidence and motivation. Through positive reinforcement and targeted praise, tutors help students believe in their abilities and approach the exams with a positive mindset.
Flexibility and Convenience: Private tutoring offers flexibility in terms of scheduling lessons, allowing students to balance their academic commitments and extracurricular activities effectively. With many tutors offering online lessons, students can access tutoring from the comfort of their homes, eliminating the need for travel and saving valuable time.
Finding the right private 11 plus tutor for your child can greatly impact their exam preparation and overall success. Here are some key factors to consider when searching for a tutor:
A 11 plus tutor usually combines explanations with exercises. Understanding the basic concepts is essential, but applying it through practice is equally crucial. Tutors will typically provide you with exercises to reinforce your understanding and improve your problem-solving skills. They can also practise the verbal and non-verbal part of the 11 plus with you.
