Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

🎷 Are private music lessons worth it?

In short, private music lessons are absolutely worth the investment. With a private tutor, you get to work with an expert in your chosen musical instrument, who can tailor lessons to your own learning style and goals. With this individualised approach, there´s no doubt that you can progress much quicker in music than you would in a busy classroom or in group tuition.

🧑‍🏫 What is the difference between a school music teacher and a private music tutor?

When we learn music in school, the teaching covers a broad overview of music, from theory to music history. Sometimes students may be given the opportunity to play an instrument, usually chosen by their music teacher. As well as this, the busy classroom environment often means that students don't get individual attention from their music teacher.

However, with private music tuition, classes are focused on learning a specific instrument, vocals, or on music theory. The student will receive one-to-one lessons from their tutor, meaning they have space to clarify any doubts, and the classes can be personalised to them.

💸 How much should I pay for music lessons in Manchester?

Private music lessons in Manchester typically cost between £20 and £40 per hour. It should be noted however, that the cost of music classes can vary greatly depending on the chosen instrument, the area where the classes are taking place, whether the classes are held in person or online, and the experience and qualifications of the music tutor.

🕵️ How do I find a private music tutor in Manchester?

A good place to start when you decide to look for a private music tutor in Manchester is by asking family and friends for recommendations. It is likely that someone you know has had music lessons in the past, or knows somebody who has, so can provide you with personal recommendations for a tutor.

Alternatively, you can also find tutors in local music schools or tuition centres.

There are also many online platforms, such as FindTutors, that make finding a tutor easy. You can search through a range of tutors and filter them by their availability, teaching level and cost.

Manchester is well-known for its vibrant music scene, and with the number of options available, you should have no issues in finding a tutor to suit your needs.

🪇 What is the best age to start music lessons?

How do I choose a good music tutor?

What constitutes a good music tutor can differ according to the individual. However, here are some things to consider when choosing a private tutor for music:

  • Qualifications. While it´s not absolutely necessary that a private music tutor has qualifications, it's good to know whether they are trained in the instrument you hope to learn.
  • Experience. Like with qualifications, it's not absolutely necessary for a tutor to have a lot of experience with tutoring music, although they should have experience with the chosen instrument. However, if you´re a parent seeking a music tutor for children, it's a good idea to check that they have a DBS check and past experience working with children.
  • Qualities. A good tutor should be patient, empathetic and adaptable. Especially if you´re a beginner at learning how to play an instrument, your tutor should create an environment where you feel comfortable enough to ask questions or share your doubts. Furthermore, a good tutor is enthusiastic and passionate about what they teach. Having a tutor like this means that you´re more likely to stay motivated with your learning.

Best instruments for beginners

There are some instruments that may be easier for students to progress in than others. Some examples of these are:

  • Piano. Piano is a very sought-after instrument and there are many piano tutors available. It's a good place to start when learning music as it can be a little easier to understand and learn scales.
  • Guitar. Guitar is another popular instrument that many students want to master, and there is no shortage of guitar tutors. The guitar is a great starter instrument as you can buy a good-quality beginner guitar for a reasonable price.
  • Ukulele. If you want to play an instrument similar to guitar that´s a little cheaper and takes up less space, a ukulele is a great option for you. It's a fantastic beginner instrument and you can progress to playing some simple songs very quickly.

Ultimately, the best instrument for a beginner to play is the one that calls them or the one they feel motivated to learn. Perhaps you´ve felt inspired by a particular musician or a music genre. No matter what you choose, hiring a music tutor can motivate you further and set you on the right path for mastering your chosen instrument.

In-person lessons vs online music lessons

Nowadays many people wonder if it's possible to learn music online from home, and whether online music lessons truly match face-to-face lessons. The answer is yes, it's possible and there are many online music tutors available for classes. However, let's explore the differences between both, so you can decide what type of music lessons work best for you.

  • Face-to-face music lessons: With in-person music lessons, many people find they feel more motivated as they have a tutor physically present who can hold them accountable. If you´re a beginner at an instrument, it can be beneficial to have face-to-face classes so that your tutor can correct your form if needed. Finally, with face-to-face lessons, you don't need to use the internet, which can be unreliable at times.
  • Music lessons online: Online music classes mean you don't have to travel to and from lessons, which can be beneficial if you have time or mobility constraints. For this reason also, they tend to be a little cheaper than traditional classes. With online lessons, you and your tutor have access to a large array of online resources which you can share with each other. Finally, with various video calling platforms, you can record calls, meaning you can record your music classes and keep them for future revision.

Can I learn music by myself?

It is indeed possible to learn music by yourself, especially with the wealth of online resources we now have available at our fingertips. However, if you want to progress quickly with an instrument, and ensure you have the correct form and theory from the very beginning, it's advised that you find a private music teacher. Online resources, YouTube videos and music-learning apps are brilliant supplementary resources you can use alongside your private music lessons.
