My approach to tutoring is rooted in building confidence, understanding, and independence in every learner. With over 30 years of teaching experience, including significant work with students with special educational needs, I recognise that every student learns differently. I take time to identify individual strengths, gaps in knowledge, and barriers to learning, using this to shape personalised lessons that are both accessible and appropriately challenging. I specialise in breaking down complex scientific and mathematical concepts into manageable steps, using clear explanations, targeted questioning, and real-life examples to support understanding. I place a strong emphasis on developing exam skills and subject-specific vocabulary, while also fostering resilience and a positive mindset towards learning. I have developed effective strategies to support reluctant learners and students with ASC and ADHD, helping them to engage more positively with learning. I focus on creating a calm, structured, and predictable environment, where expectations are clear and tasks are broken down into manageable steps. By using flexible teaching approaches, including visual aids, practical activities, and regular check-ins, I am able to maintain focus and reduce anxiety around learning. I place great importance on building positive relationships and trust, which helps students feel safe, understood, and more willing to participate. Through patience, consistency, and encouragement, I support students in developing motivation, independence, and confidence in their abilities.
