Experienced GCSE English Tutor/Head of English and Examiner Experience

I highly recommend Emily. She took a genuine interest in helping my son and tailored each session to his needs. She has an in-depth knowledge of the English GCSE requirements and, as both a teacher and a former GCSE marker, she was able to prepare him effectively and help him answer the papers to his best ability and achieve the marks he needed. She was always reliable and friendly, and my son really enjoyed working with her.

Very good lesson format, with clear explanations of what the examiners were looking for (past papers & question practice). Helped me improve my confidence and understanding of GCSE English language requirements.

Emily is a really great tutor. I was very confident for the exam as she helped me significantly improve my English language skills. She is very good at listening and adapting the lessons to your needs - I would definitely recommend!

Emily was a lovely tutor, and helped me go up two grades in my English GCSEs, she also spent time finding booklets of quotes and themes that I could practice at home.

I cannot recommend Emily enough! She has a wealth of experience and is excellent at planning and delivering high quality lessons, which my son has fully engaged with. He enjoys her teaching style and looks forward to her lessons.

I used Emily McFadden as an English tutor for my son and daughter, leading up to GCSE exams 2023 and 2025 respectively. I chose her specifically because i wanted her to provide them with work targeted at the 7-9 gcse grades, at the time i wasn’t confident in the pace of lessons and the progress they were making at school in order to get there through schoolwork alone. Emily approached their tutoring with this in mind, but assessed them professionally to ensure this aim was reasonable for them to aspire to, which it was. Both my son and daughter found her professional and knowledgeable, approachable and friendly. She clearly laid out differences between answers that were grades 7, 8 and 9 and showed them the quality of responses to each question which allowed them to very clearly understand what they needed to achieve. Both my son and daughter achieved grades they were happy with and I can honestly say that Emily provided a large contribution to this. Her expertise was invaluable.

Emily is a brilliant tutor! I struggled with being at school full time and Emily was an amazing tutor with helping me catch up and teaching me for my GCSE’s. Thank you Emily!

The tutoring sessions was very good. EMILY explained everything clearly and helped me understand the topics better. I found the session useful and enjoyable.

Emily helped me achieve top grades in GCSE English Language and Literature by developing my independent analysis and creative writing skills. Initially, she led by example by demonstrating how to analyse different kinds of literature properly and structure essays effectively. As I improved, she gradually encouraged me to develop my own ideas first and helped me channel them effectively, which is what I struggled with the most in English. She gave me constructive criticism on the independent work I completed at home and gave me the knowledge and confidence I needed to achieve my potential in this subject.

I was tutored by Emily for just over a year for GCSE English Literature and Language, during which she really helped me improve my confidence, enabling me to achieve high grades. Her teaching style, advice, and feedback were always supportive, effective, and tailored to the areas I struggled with most. Emily consistently helped me identify and improve weaker areas through reviewing school mocks, independent revision practice, and papers we worked on together. Her detailed feedback strengthened my analysis, structure, and exam technique, helping me better understand the mark scheme and how to attain higher marks. She also provided effective revision strategies, exam techniques, and useful tips that helped me approach both mocks and final exams with far more confidence. Overall, I felt significantly more confident in both English Literature and Language after working with her, and I would highly recommend her as a tutor!

During our lessons, Emily has helped me achieve my set goals, going into detail with work and covering my weak topics that I struggled on. Without Emily's help, I wouldnt be confident in my work and I would have had no ideas for what to write about in my English Language exam.
