I am an English Literature Tutor for GCSE and A Level

I am a student of English Literature at the university of Newcastle, have had experience tutoring at GCSE level for 2 years and received an A in A-level English literature. My aim is to make English feel possible, and to help students feel confident in their abilities so that they are in the right mindset to learn and to improve. I understand from first hand experience the difficulties of losing your confidence in a subject and how that can impact not only your grades but your mental health. Encouragement and positivity are essential in creating an environment where learning can be effective and enjoyable, this is always my focus! Although there is a basic structure to my lessons that I find to be effective, these sessions are for the student and therefore I will always be fully adaptable to suit what will be most beneficial for them. In teaching it is never ‘one size fits all.’ There are many factors that may contribute to this, however the bottom line is everyone learns in different ways and therefore, going in, the most important thing is to assess each student independently as to understand what they need and what they respond to. In the past I have scratched structure entirely and spent the session looking through an essay they just got back or consolidating knowledge from a class that day. These sessions are for the student, if they need to discuss something outside of the lesson plan then I will always adapt to make it happen. I'm a very dedicated, hard-working and charismatic individual and have a passion for teaching. School is hard and the pressure can be immense, but with a bit of extra support there's no reason why anyone can't perform better and feel better.
