Advert description
As both a trained theatre practitioner and certified English teacher I believe that teaching is an art form and the fundamental role of the teacher is to activate a student's awareness, understanding and knowledge of the world in which we live through 'play'. Whether you are
an infant, teenager, adult, or elder, we learn by doing: doing something we enjoy. Teaching English as a foreign language is not easy yet through the medium of drama and theatre something magical occurs.
This is a philosophy I strongly practice in my teaching and a methodology I began developing during my Masters degree at The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London - the cognitive semiotic relationship between theatre and education. British Dramatist Edward Bond believes that theatre has the ability to teach, claiming that “a just society lies in the hands of children” and that “engagement with the theatre has the potential to encourage young people to become competent members of a critical culture” (Nicholson 2009, p. 11). Furthermore,
drama uses the same emotional and intellectual (psycho-physical) means by which, from birth onwards, and critically during childhood, each of us creates a ‘self’, and theatre-in-education encourages young people to channel their developing 'self' into an ever-changing society - a beautiful journey for a teacher to be able to facilitate and witness. Ultimately, it is these values that I have embedded into my developing practice as a teacher and why I choose to teach English through theatre and drama. Since drama and theatre has the ability to change the way
we think and act in our society, what better way to use it than as a learning medium and a vehicle of social betterment?
