Private History Tutor for A Levels and GCSEs

Advert description

Hi, I’m Melissa! I’m an experienced private tutor specialising in GCSE and A-Level History, with two years of private tutoring experience. I also spent a year working as a clerical assistant at a successful tuition centre, where I observed lessons and gained valuable insight into effective teaching methods. History has always been a subject I have thoroughly enjoyed, particularly at A-Level, where I developed a strong interest in understanding how and why events happened, rather than simply memorising dates and facts. I went on to graduate from the University of Nottingham with a degree in Criminology and have since completed the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) at the University of Law, with graduation approaching. My History lessons are engaging, structured and tailored to each student’s exam board, current level and target grade. I focus on helping students build a secure understanding of the content while developing the skills needed to turn that knowledge into strong exam answers. This includes analysing causes and consequences, evaluating the significance of events, comparing historical interpretations and using evidence to support a clear argument. For GCSE and A-Level students, I generally recommend alternating between content and exam technique lessons, as I believe both are equally important. Content lessons go beyond simply learning what happened: we explore the wider context, make connections between events and consider different historical perspectives. At A-Level, I also place particular emphasis on developing more sophisticated analysis, evaluation and the use of relevant evidence and statistics. In exam technique lessons, students put their knowledge into practice through live writing. Using a platform such as Lessonspace, I can monitor their work in real time while displaying the PowerPoint on the board. This allows me to provide immediate guidance on essay structure, source analysis, argument development and exam technique, helping students understand how to turn their knowledge into a convincing, well-supported answer. I have supported students in progressing from Ds to A*s, with many achieving significant improvements within a short period of time. Above all, I aim to help students become more confident, independent historians who can approach both the content and the exam with a clear understanding of what is expected of them.
