Oxford PPE Graduate teaching A Level & GCSE Maths. 4 A*s student at A Level including Maths and Economics. First-Class on Oxford’s Quantitative Economics Paper

Advert description

I first encountered A Level Maths during a gap year, when I taught myself the course on a condensed timetable. I went on to achieve an A* in A Level Maths, which sits alongside my A*s in Economics, History and Politics. I then studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) at Oxford, where I achieved a First in Quantitative Economics and particularly enjoyed the mathematical and statistical side of the degree. I love pure maths and statistics, and I find guiding students towards that “a-ha!” moment — when something suddenly clicks — to be one of the most satisfying parts of tutoring. One student I am particularly proud to have worked with was a mature applicant who received an Oxford PPE offer in January, conditional on achieving an A in A Level Maths that June, despite not yet having started the course. We worked through the syllabus together week by week, beginning with the fundamentals and building upwards. He achieved the grade and is now studying PPE at Oxford. In my lessons, I start by identifying where a student is struggling and building up their understanding from there. I often find that difficulties arise because an earlier part of the topic was never fully understood, so where necessary I go back with my students and rebuild those foundations properly. Rather than relying on memorisation, I help students understand where methods come from and why they work. We build up difficult ideas from first principles, using diagrams, graphs and visual tools wherever possible so that each step makes sense. For A Level Maths, I personally teach all of Pure Maths alongside Probability and Statistics. For Mechanics, I work closely with my friend and fellow Oxford graduate Hamza, who teaches that part of the course. We keep a shared record of each student’s progress and regularly discuss where they are doing well and where they may need more support. Students who work with us therefore have two Oxford economics graduates working closely together across the full A Level course. At the end of each lesson, my students receive a lesson pack containing the work we completed together, giving them a useful resource to revisit afterwards.

Spencer was both an inspiration and a fantastic tutor. He broke down the A Level Maths content in a way that made it accessible and intuitive, covering the material in just four months. From having never studied A Level Maths, Spencer was instrumental in helping me achieve the conditions of my Oxford offer.
